The city of Papa Luna prepares the start of the tourist season with the celebration of the Holy Week. From 14 to 28 April, Peñíscola offers its visitors various cultural, recreational and sports activities for all audiences that complement the traditional religious agenda of Easter days.
Easter is known mainly for its religious acts. Peñíscola also has different events of this kind, which are held in the old part of the city. The next 16 April will be the turn of the Community Celebration of Penance in the parish of Santa Maria, while on 18 April, Maundy Thursday, the Lord’s Supper will be celebrated with a subsequent procession that will tour the centre of the town.
Good Friday will be the day with the most religious activities. In the morning there will be a Via Crucis followed by another Via Crucis for children. During the afternoon there will be the celebration of the Passion and Death of the Lord and in the evening the Burial Procession. Saturday 20 April will be the time for the celebration of the Easter Vigil, while on Easter Sunday a solemn Mass will be held with the Procession of the “Meeting” and an Easter Eucharist. The last religious events will be Sunday, April 28, the day of the San Antonio pilgrimage.
Throughout the month of April, Peñíscola has been celebrating The Month of the Book. For instance, on the 15 of April there will take place a storyteller in the Library by Joana Bruna (writer and illustrator), and on the 17 of April there will be a workshop to guide families and teachers on the techniques, resources and dynamics that favour the reading in the family. The activity is called Com fer fills lectors i filles lectores? (How to make children read?) and it will be given by Enric Ramiro.
During Easter, the municipality will also host the XVII international Peñíscola Guitar Festival, which will be held at the Congress Palace. Attendees can enjoy a weekend full of music thanks to the different concerts scheduled.
Saturday, April 20, Javier Garcia Moreno construed ‘The Major Works of the Guitar’ and the String & Vocal Trio will play ‘Cuban music’. The next day, on Sunday 21, William Jenks will perform a performance titled ‘… From America ‘and Joaquín Palomares and Fernando Espí will perform ’A Stroll through the World of Music‘. All these concerts will have a price of €10.
On Saturday 20 and Saturday 27 of April, Peñíscola will host various sporting events. The first Saturday there will be a game of 1st Division Futsal between Industrias Santa Coloma and Rehab Medic, while the second Saturday there will be three Futsal games played: Peñíscola vs Esporting club Villarreal F. S cadet category “A”, Peñíscola vs Esporting Club Villarreal F. S. “A” for children and Peñíscola vs CFSJPM Burriana “A” for alevin.
