‘La Mocadorà’ and the Valencians’ day

‘La Mocadorà’ is a popular celebration of the city of Valencia and surrounding, which takes place on the day of the Valencian Community (9 October), which is also the day of Sant Donís, patron of Valencian lovers.

The tradition is that men give women a handkerchief (mocador in Valencian) in which there are wrapped sweets made with marzipan of different shapes and colors that represent fruits and vegetables of ‘la huerta valenciana’.

The commemoration of the entrance of Jaime I the Conqueror in the city, probably began with the first centenary (1238) of the entrance to the city, and, little by little, it became an annual party. On the eve of the festival and throughout the day of San Donís firecrackers were launched (according to the chronicles, there was a year in which 13,000 firecrackers were launched from the terrace of the Palace of the Generalitat). It was a very noisy and fresh party for the authorities of the time who watched with suspicion as the pleasures of the flesh were also evident.

The tradition of ‘La Mocadorà’ goes back to the XVIII century, when after the War of Succession, the New Plant Decrees prohibited the celebration of the entrance of Jaime I in Valencia. In response to the Bourbon ban, the confectionery guild of the city of Valencia decided to make sweets in the form of banned firecrackers, thus initiating a custom that has been maintained until today.

From the beginning, the sweets were wrapped in a handkerchief and all together, sweets and handkerchief, was the gift for the beloved woman. Little by little, the handkerchief gave name to the celebration.

For this tradition, many Valencians consider October 9th as the day of lovers (their particular Valentine). It is also a tradition that women keep all the handkerchiefs that their partner gives them year after year since they started dating (they are a proof of love and as such are preserved).

On October 9th is the Day of the Valencian Community and commemorates the entrance to the city of Valencia of King Jaime I in 1238.

One of the most interesting initiatives to commemorate the festivity is “9 palaces for October 9th”: nine palaces in Valencia will open its doors to be able to visit them on the inside. Among them, ‘El Palau de la Generalitat’.

To commemorate on October 9th a series of acts will be held throughout the Community and especially in Valencia such as:
